Superintendent's Page

Bio:    Dr. Davis has been working as a teacher and administrator since 1976.  His most recent appointment is that of Superintendent for RSU #57 (Massabesic Schools).  The Board appointed him in October of 2011.  Dr. Davis has worked as a superintendent most recently in Maine and Alaska.

After college, he was hired to teach in a small community on Prince of Wales Island, in Alaska.  During his career, he has taught grades 1 & 2, vocational education and has been a one-room high school teacher.  He has taught at the University level, was a school principal and has been a school superintendent since 1987.  During his tenure as superintendent, he has been involved in school district consolidation and significant school reform initiatives.
The goal of education has always been to teach children.  In the past 13 years Dr. Davis has been working closely with others to make the teaching of all children to high levels a reality.  We now understand our schools were better designed to sort children based on time.  Looking for ways to make sure our focus is not about seat time, but about learning, presents many new challenges.  If children do not learn at the same rate, how can we organize (personalize) our learning environment to meet their educational needs?  Insisting each child learns represent a significant shift for educators, policy makers, students, and parents.
Maine is his family’s ancestral home.  He grew up spending summers in Casco Bay where he has built his own cottage and now spends summers with his children. Both children are teenagers and the oldest is starting to learn to drive (just seems like we learned to ride a bike!).  Dr. Davis has tried to open up the world through travel and  they have visited four continents and have traveled considerably throughout the U.S.  Dr. Davis regularly speaks on issues of the need for educational reform and is an active teacher trainer.  He has served on professional boards and as President of various professional associations.  He is a recognized expert in the area of educational reform by the Alaskan court system.  He holds a Bachelors Degree in History from Birmingham-Southern College and advanced degrees in Educational Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.
