This week at Massabesic Middle School, 7th graders completed a unit called “Wabanaki Week”, where students’ learned about the history and culture of Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Maleceet, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Nations. Students celebrated their learning with a performance from Penobscot performer, Firefly - who shared about the rich history of his home on Indian Island in Old Town, and performed several Wabanaki songs of welcome, honor, and strength. Firefly was joined by his wife, Donna, who led our students’ in traditional dances, including the “round dance”. Several 7th graders were even invited to join Firefly on stage and perform with him! A great big thank you to Firefly and Donna for their incredible performance, and to Ms. Jordyn Chase who was instrumental in making today’s event happen! Thank you to our transportation, operations, food service and instructional staff for navigating unforeseen challenges today. We are also grateful to parents and guardians for their patience as we coordinated getting students home safely this afternoon. Approximately 70% of homes within RSU 57 are currently without power, including three of our schools. As we look to tomorrow, decisions regarding school cancellations will be made at an individual school level. Any closures or cancellations will be relayed to you early tomorrow morning. As crews continue to work towards restoring power, we are mindful of the impacts that these challenges will have on our students and families. Our thoughts are with those who were impacted and we wish you a safe and healthy evening.
